A small green shoot in the labor market
The Conference Board says its Employment Trends Index ticked up in July to 107.71, rising from an upwardly revised 106.74 in June. Translation: the labor market may not be sprinting, but it’s still jogging with purpose.
Why investors should care
This index doesn’t move markets by itself like a jobs report or a Fed meeting, but it can help color the macro backdrop. If the index is pointing to continued payroll growth, that’s a sign the economy may still have enough muscle to avoid the dreaded hard-landing drama.
The read-through
A firmer labor backdrop can mean a few things for your portfolio:
- consumers may keep spending a bit longer,
- recession fears get pushed further into the “maybe later” drawer,
- and the Fed gets one more data point to chew on before deciding whether to stay cautious.
Big picture: one index won’t settle the debate, but it’s another reminder that the jobs market is proving annoyingly resilient.
