SpaceX is set to launch 29 Starlink satellites from Cape Canaveral on Monday using Falcon 9 booster B1085 — a booster that’s already been to space 17 times. If the landing goes to plan, it’ll touch down on a droneship in the Atlantic about eight minutes after liftoff. In SpaceX land, that’s not a moon-landing moment. It’s basically Tuesday.
The secret sauce: making rockets boring
This is the whole business model in a nutshell. Reusing boosters instead of tossing them after one ride lets SpaceX launch more often and keep costs down. That matters a lot when a fresh Falcon 9 launch is around $74 million, not the NASA Shuttle-era “please call finance” kind of expensive.
Reuse is the moat
SpaceX says it has completed about 650 orbital launches, with more than 540 using flight-proven Falcon rockets. That means the company has turned a once-radical idea into its default operating mode. The bragging rights are nice, but the investor takeaway is simpler: fewer throwaway rockets, lower mission costs, higher cadence, and more room to dominate the launch market.
The bigger prize is still ahead
Falcon 9 still tosses the upper stage, so the real grand experiment is Starship, where SpaceX wants to reuse the entire rocket. That’s the version tied to the Moon mission contract — and, eventually, Musk’s Mars fever dream. Big picture: Monday’s launch may look routine, but routine is exactly what makes SpaceX dangerous to everyone else.
