Target’s new AI overlord
Target just handed AI a spot at the grown-ups’ table. The retailer named Chandhu Nair as its first-ever chief artificial intelligence officer, which is corporate-speak for: “We’re not treating this like a side project anymore.”
Why this matters
For a big-box retailer, AI isn’t just chatbot glitter. It can touch inventory, pricing, supply-chain planning, merchandising, and how quickly the company reacts when shoppers suddenly decide they need 14 throw pillows and a waffle maker.
If Target can use AI to reduce waste, stock the right stuff, and make the shopping experience less clunky, that’s the kind of unsexy operational magic investors love. Not exactly a Super Bowl ad moment, but margins do enjoy a glow-up.
Big picture
This move also shows how widespread the AI arms race has become. Everyone from tech giants to your neighborhood retailer wants a piece of the action, because no one wants to be the last company still manually spreadsheeting the future.
Big picture: a new title doesn’t guarantee a new profit stream, but it does signal where Target thinks the next efficiency gains might come from.
