New country, same app, more places to click buy
Robinhood is rolling out crypto trading for eligible UK customers this week, and it’s doing it with Bitstamp UK Ltd as the on-ramp. That means users can now access more than 50 cryptocurrencies without leaving the same app they use for stocks & shares ISAs, equities, options, and futures. Classic Robinhood move: if you already opened the app, why not give you one more thing to trade?
The pitch: cheap, easy, and a little more sticky
The company is leaning hard into the no-fees vibe here — zero trading fees, no account maintenance fees, and no custody fees — though UK customers still get dinged with FX charges. That’s the kind of detail that sounds tiny until you realize it’s where the business can quietly make money while wearing a “we’re making finance simpler” hoodie.
It’s not just crypto trading either. Robinhood is also launching Cortex Digests for Crypto, an AI tool that turns market data, news, technical indicators, and proprietary signals into plain-English explanations. In other words: a built-in translator for the very volatile thing people keep insisting they understand right before they don’t.
Why investors should care
This matters because HOOD keeps pushing beyond being “that meme-stock app” and into a broader financial ecosystem. More products, more geographies, more reasons for users to stay glued to the platform — and that usually helps engagement, monetization, and the long-term bull case.
Robinhood Chain also got another nod in the announcement, with the layer-2 network now showing more than $18 billion in DEX trading volume and over $840 million in total value locked since its July 1 global launch. Big picture: the company is still trying to turn one app into a whole financial operating system, and the UK is the latest test case.
