SpaceX’s new favorite child
Elon Musk thinks SpaceX’s AI arm is about to graduate from side hustle to main character. In an all-hands meeting, he said AI revenue could overtake the rest of the company by September and then pull even farther ahead in the fourth quarter.
That’s a pretty wild pivot for a company most people still associate with rockets, satellites, and the occasional internet-from-space meme. But the numbers Musk tossed out are the kind that make investors sit up straight: AI brought in $2.56 billion in Q2, while Starlink’s connectivity business did $4.29 billion. SpaceX is now talking about a roughly $100 billion annualized revenue run rate by year-end.
The math is doing a lot of heavy lifting
A big chunk of the bullish case comes from compute economics, not magic. SemiAnalysis estimates that one megawatt of frontier AI inference on Nvidia-grade gear can generate around $100 million in annual revenue, with scarce capacity renting for something like $30 million to $50 million per megawatt a year.
SpaceX says it could have more than two gigawatts of compute online by year-end. If you run that through SemiAnalysis’s assumptions, you get eye-popping numbers. But that’s the key phrase: assumptions. This is model-based math, not a SpaceX promise carved into a rocket fuselage.
Why investors should care
If Musk is even roughly right, SpaceX isn’t just a launch company with a satellite side business anymore. It’s trying to become a speed-run data-center giant, and speed matters because customers will pay up for capacity that shows up in months instead of a year-plus.
- SpaceX says AI investments are paying back in less than a year.
- Musk says building data centers is easier than building rockets, which is very on-brand.
- Alphabet is cited as an example of the premium customers will pay for fast capacity.
Big picture: this is less about whether SpaceX can launch more rockets and more about whether it can turn raw compute into an absurdly fast-growing cash machine. If it works, the company’s business mix could look very different by the time you finish your next coffee.
