Project Crystal Sun? More like Project Big Swing
Tesla is reportedly eyeing a $10.1 billion solar cell plant in Fort Bend County, Texas, and the scale alone is doing the talking. The proposed site would bundle the whole solar chain under one roof — ingots, wafers, modules, the works — which is a very Tesla move: if there’s a supply chain, why not try to own it?
Why investors are side-eyeing this
The company already has a solar panel operation in Buffalo, but this would be a much more serious manufacturing footprint. If the project gets built, Tesla says it could create 9,712 permanent jobs and 1,147 construction jobs, with commercial operations targeted for the first quarter of 2029.
The nuclear joke, but make it business
Chamath Palihapitiya used the news to riff that Tesla is really making a bet on nuclear because, well, the sun is a giant nuclear reactor. Cute line. But the real takeaway is more grounded: Tesla appears to be leaning harder into energy infrastructure, not just EVs and robot dreams.
And if you’re keeping score, Tesla’s stock slipped 1.59% on Wednesday and fell another 0.16% after hours, so traders clearly weren’t throwing confetti at the headline.
Big picture: Tesla keeps trying to be less of a car company and more of an everything-company. Sometimes that’s visionary. Sometimes it’s just expensive. This one looks like both.
