The invite is finally in the mail
Reddit spent most of the year getting snubbed by the S&P 500 like it was waiting outside the cool kids' table. Not anymore. S&P Dow Jones Indices said the stock will join the benchmark before the open on Tuesday, August 18, and the market immediately did what the market does: it got excited.
Why Reddit got the nod
The opening came from a little corporate domino effect. AvalonBay Communities is getting absorbed by Equity Residential in a merger of equals, which clears out a spot in the index. Shareholders approved the deal, the transaction is set to close as soon as Monday, and the combined company will come out the other side with a fresh name — Vivmark Residential — plus the ticker VMRK.
That left S&P with a vacancy, and Reddit was the obvious beneficiary after missing out earlier this year when other names got the green light instead. It had already been passed over in favor of Ferguson Enterprises in August and lost out to Marvell Technology and FLEX back in June. Brutal? Sure. But also very Wall Street: one day you're “not ready,” the next day you're in the club.
Why investors should care
Index inclusion isn't just a shiny badge. It can trigger real buying from funds that track the S&P 500, which means Reddit could see a wave of mechanical demand ahead of the rebalance.
- RDDT was up 11.03% in after-hours trading to $175.56
- Index funds will need to build positions before the Tuesday open
- The move also gives Reddit a little extra legitimacy — the financial version of getting verified
Big picture: Reddit just went from meme-adjacent newcomer to S&P 500 resident. That doesn't make the stock cheap, but it does make it harder for big-money portfolios to ignore.
