All eyes on August 27
IREN has already had quite the month: the stock ripped from a July low of $28.80 to a $49 peak before cooling off to around $44. Now the next potential catalyst is sitting right there on the calendar — earnings on August 27 — and traders are acting like the popcorn is already in the microwave.
Why the setup feels spicy
This isn’t just your average “did they beat EPS?” moment. IREN is being lumped into the neocloud crowd, which is basically the hottest club in markets right now. CoreWeave and Nebius recently flashed triple-digit revenue growth and monster backlogs, which makes investors think demand for AI infrastructure is still running hot.
And IREN has its own fireworks: a $9.3 billion Microsoft deal from last year, plus a fresh $2.8 billion batch of contracts in July with names like Figure AI, Fluidstack, Fireworks AI, and Hume AI. That helped push its expected annual recurring revenue above $4 billion. Translation: the growth story is real, even if the path there looks like a roller coaster.
The bear case won’t sit quietly
Here’s the part that keeps the bears awake: short interest is 26%, which is a big ol’ neon sign saying plenty of traders think this thing is overcooked. The worries are pretty classic capital-intensive-company stuff — servers, memory, and GPUs are expensive, competition is heating up, and any growth spurt could come with more debt or dilution attached.
There’s also a Bitcoin-shaped shadow hanging over the quarter. Benzinga’s estimate calls for revenue to drop 26% sequentially to $139 million, with the mining business still influencing the headline numbers. So even if the AI side keeps dazzling, the market may still zoom in on margins, capex, and whether the company can keep scaling without turning the balance sheet into a science experiment.
Big picture
Options traders are basically telling you to expect a move, not a nap. With short interest this high and the sector momentum still strong, IREN’s earnings could either feed the bull case for AI infrastructure — or give the skeptics exactly what they’ve been waiting for.
