OceanaGold is buying more gold turf
OceanaGold just signed a scheme implementation deed to acquire Ausgold, the company behind the Katanning Gold Project in Western Australia. Translation: the miner is trying to grow by swallowing another miner instead of waiting around for geology to cooperate.
Why investors should care
This is the kind of deal that can change the whole storyline for a gold producer. On one hand, it could give OceanaGold more scale and a stronger long-term pipeline. On the other, acquisitions always come with the usual baggage: integration risk, capital spending, and the eternal question of whether management is paying for a dream or a deal.
The deal math
The headline price is around A$776 million, which is not exactly pocket change unless your pockets are made of bullion. For OceanaGold, this looks like a strategic land grab in a pretty friendly mining jurisdiction, and that may matter more than a flashy one-quarter production beat.
Big picture
Gold miners love a good growth story almost as much as they love gold itself. If this acquisition lands smoothly, OceanaGold could come out with a bigger, sturdier asset base. If not, well, mergers in mining have a way of turning into expensive treasure hunts.
