Sky’s the limit?
Uber is taking its delivery game airborne. The company announced a strategic partnership with Zipline, the drone-delivery specialist, to scale autonomous deliveries across the U.S. for Uber Eats customers.
What’s actually happening
The first deployments are slated to begin later this year, which means your burrito might not be showing up in a car at all. Instead, it could glide in on a drone and land in minutes. Uber also said it plans to make a strategic investment in Zipline, which adds a little extra skin in the game.
Why investors should care
This isn’t just a flashy demo for the product reel. If Uber can make drone delivery work at scale, it could:
- Speed up delivery times and improve customer satisfaction
- Expand Uber Eats’ operational reach without relying only on drivers
- Give Uber another story to tell about becoming a logistics platform, not just a ride-hailing app
Big picture: Uber keeps trying to look less like an app that gets you a car and more like a company that moves stuff — and people — in whatever way is fastest. Today, that means drones.
