Coherent says it has begun customer sampling of its 300mm high thermal conductivity silicon carbide substrates to leading AI semiconductor partners. Translation: the company is moving its fancy chip-material tech out of the lab and into the hands of people who might actually buy it.
Why investors care
Sampling is not the same thing as commercial scale, but it’s a step in the right direction. In the AI hardware world, everyone’s hunting for the next bottleneck-busting component, and silicon carbide is one of those materials that can help with heat management — which is basically the unglamorous superhero of modern computing.
The real question
If these substrates win over customers, Coherent could be carving out a stronger spot in the AI infrastructure supply chain. If not, it’s still a nice demo reel, just not yet a money machine.
Big picture: in AI, the winners aren’t always the loudest names — sometimes they’re the ones selling the stuff that keeps the hottest chips from melting down.
