The market’s having a mild Nvidia panic
Nvidia is doing something that sounds a little backwards for a company printing AI money: it’s helping finance the very ecosystem that keeps the AI boom humming. Bank of America says that’s why some investors are squinting at the stock like it just texted them “we need to talk.”
Why BofA thinks the math still works
The note says Nvidia has committed roughly $300 billion to AI ecosystem partners through equity stakes, guarantees, and other backstops. That’s a giant number — the kind that makes your coffee go cold — but BofA argues it looks scarier than it is because Nvidia isn’t just tossing cash into a bonfire.
The bank estimates Nvidia could generate about $470 billion in free cash flow across calendar 2026 and 2027. In other words, the company may have enough firepower to fund the ecosystem and still leave shareholders with a very fat stack of leftovers.
The real investor question: risk or moat?
BofA’s argument is basically that Nvidia isn’t behaving like a passive chip supplier anymore. It’s trying to control the whole AI stack — chips, land, power, data centers, the works — which could make the business stickier and the moat wider.
A few key pieces from the note:
- About $70 billion of the commitments are direct equity investments
- Roughly $230 billion are guarantees or financing backstops, not plain-vanilla cash gifts
- For Nvidia, the chips themselves may have residual value if a customer project gets messy
That’s the financial version of “it’s complicated,” and it’s why BofA thinks the market may be discounting Nvidia too aggressively.
The price target says the drama is overdone
BofA reiterated Buy and lifted its price objective to $350, which implies about 55% upside from Monday’s close. The firm also says Nvidia reports second-quarter results on August 26th, and it expects revenue of $94 billion to $95 billion versus a $91 billion guide.
The big picture: Nvidia may be spending like a king, but BofA thinks it’s still minting enough cash to make the whole AI ecosystem bet look less like a gamble and more like a power play.
