Louisiana just got a bigger Amazon footprint
Amazon said Tuesday it’s raising its planned investment in northwest Louisiana to $18 billion, up from $12 billion, and adding a third data center campus in Shreveport. If you’re keeping score at home, that’s not a little tweak — that’s Amazon saying the AI/cloud arms race still has plenty of gas in the tank.
Why investors should care
The expansion matters because it points to more heavy-duty spending behind AWS-style infrastructure, the kind of thing that can fuel growth for years but also chew through cash like a hungry teenager in a snack aisle. Amazon says the three campuses could create up to 750 full-time jobs and support 2,500 additional positions.
The local bill is getting padded — not passed on
The company also said it plans to spend up to $400 million on public water infrastructure and cover the energy infrastructure and grid upgrades needed for the data centers. Translation: Amazon wants the power, but local ratepayers aren’t supposed to get stuck with the tab.
Big picture
Amazon has now invested more than $6 billion in Louisiana since 2010, and this latest move makes the state look even more like a permanent piece of its data-center chessboard. For shareholders, the headline is simple: Amazon keeps leaning into the infrastructure build that supports its long-term cloud and AI ambitions.
