Exxon’s Mozambique bet is still alive
ExxonMobil just awarded $1.1 billion in pre-FID contracts for Rovuma LNG phase one. In plain English: the company is spending real money before the project gets its final investment decision, which is the corporate equivalent of putting down a nonrefundable deposit on a very expensive house.
Why this matters
For investors, pre-FID work is a tell. It suggests Exxon still sees enough upside in Mozambique’s LNG reserves to keep the project moving instead of letting it gather dust in the “nice idea, maybe later” folder.
The bigger picture
This doesn’t mean the project is fully cleared or that cash starts rolling in tomorrow. But it does mean Exxon is keeping the Mozambique LNG option warm, and in energy land, that can be the difference between a project that survives and one that quietly disappears.
- The spend is tied to phase one of Rovuma LNG
- The contracts were awarded before FID, so the project is still in the prep stage
- For shareholders, it’s another reminder that Exxon is still playing the long game on global LNG
Big picture: Exxon is still leaning into gas, and Mozambique remains part of that plan.
