From coffee runs to college bills
PayPal and Venmo are pushing deeper into the “please don’t make me think about this expense” category. Students and families can now use the apps to pay tuition through new integrations with Illumia, Nelnet Campus Commerce, and TouchNet.
That sounds niche, but payment companies live and die by one thing: how many places they can show up at checkout. The more everyday and high-stakes payments they can sneak into, the stickier the ecosystem gets.
Why investors should care
This isn’t a giant blockbuster deal, but it does tell you a few things:
- PayPal is still leaning into real-world usage, not just app buzz
- Venmo keeps drifting from “split the dinner bill” into a broader consumer payments brand
- Education payments are another little lane where PayPal can collect volume without having to invent a brand-new product
The bigger picture
The move also puts PayPal in the same sentence as campus payment infrastructure, which is not exactly glamorous — but it is useful. If you’re trying to prove your network still matters, being the button people click to pay tuition beats being the app they only open when a friend forgot their share of Uber.
Big picture: this is the kind of incremental expansion that won’t make headlines forever, but it helps keep PayPal in more payment flows — and more payment flows is the whole game.
