Another swing at India
Elon Musk is once again making the case that Starlink belongs in India, arguing the satellite service could help connect the country’s “least served” rural users. That’s not just PR fluff — India’s telecom regulator data shows a big urban-rural internet gap, and Starlink wants to be the shiny space-age broom that sweeps it up.
The approval marathon
The fresh pitch comes as Starlink reportedly reapplied to India’s space regulator for approval to deploy its Gen 2 constellation, including direct-to-device connectivity. In other words: the company is still in paperwork purgatory, but it’s trying to move the ball forward.
Starlink already picked up some building blocks in India:
- a telecom license in June 2025
- prior IN-SPACe approval for Gen 1
- distribution tie-ups with Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio for remote areas
Why investors should care
India is the kind of market that can turn a niche product into a monster if the regulatory stars align. But those stars have to actually align first. Starlink has run into security and infrastructure hurdles before, so the upside is real — but so is the usual Musk-speed uncertainty.
Big picture: if Starlink gets the green light, India could become one of the most important growth stories in SpaceX’s satellite playbook. If not, it’s another reminder that in telecom, bureaucracy can be heavier than a rocket.
