Meta, Google and Snap dodge a teen lawsuit bullet

A rare courtroom timeout

Meta, Alphabet’s Google, and Snap just got some welcome breathing room. A 15-year-old New Jersey plaintiff dropped her lawsuit alleging their platforms fueled addiction, depression, and self-harm, and the case won’t be heading into the October bellwether trial after all.

Why that matters for the stocks

Bellwether trials are basically the legal world’s test balloons. If this one had gone sideways for the companies, it could have nudged settlement talks and given thousands of other plaintiffs some fresh ammo. Instead, the companies get to argue this wasn’t a blockbuster loss — and, in their telling, the teen even received no payment.

But don’t pop the champagne just yet

This is one case, not the whole saga. The broader litigation still includes more than 3,300 personal injury claims in California state court, plus other teen cases scheduled for October. Meta is still juggling separate trials over child-safety and platform-design allegations, so the courtroom plotline is far from over.

Big picture

For now, the dismissal removes a headline risk that had been hovering over Meta, Google, and Snap like a storm cloud at a beach day. Less immediate drama is nice — but with thousands of cases still in the queue, this is more “delay the chaos” than “case closed.”
