
New deal, same old mine
BHP is teaming up with MIT spin-out SiTration to test a copper recovery pilot at its Copper Cities site in Arizona. The pitch is simple but juicy: pull LME Grade A copper out of legacy mining wastewater without chemicals or new waste, and do it with a very modest energy appetite.
Why this matters
This isn’t just science-fair stuff for the mining crowd. BHP says the first phase is a one-month trial of continuous, autonomous copper recovery, and a second phase later this year could produce up to two tons of copper cathodes over two months. If the tech works at scale, BHP gets a potential new way to squeeze value out of old assets while keeping its copper growth story humming.
Copper is having a moment
Copper is basically the espresso shot of the electrification economy: everyone needs it, and nobody can get enough. With grid buildouts, AI data centers, and broader energy infrastructure all demanding more metal, a cleaner domestic supply chain is catnip for miners and industrials alike.
For BHP, the timing is especially convenient. The company has been leaning harder into copper, and this pilot gives it another excuse to keep the spotlight off iron ore and on the shiny red metal that seems to be doing all the heavy lifting.
Big picture: if this pilot proves anything close to commercial, BHP could turn old mining mess into future-margin treasure. Not bad for a site that already spent decades as a copper workhorse.
