NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman basically looked at AI’s power appetite and said: why not move the buffet to space? His pitch is simple — if data centers can sip solar power in orbit, they might dodge the nasty little problem of needing more land, more grid capacity, and more patience from local communities.
Why the idea won’t go away
This isn’t just billionaire trivia. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory says U.S. data centers could eat up 11.8% of electricity by 2030, while the International Energy Agency sees global data-center power use nearly doubling to 950 TWh by the end of the decade. In other words, AI is becoming the world’s fanciest power hog.
The space race meets the chip race
Elon Musk has already been hyping orbital AI compute, and SpaceX says it could start flying data centers next year. Rocket Lab’s Peter Beck also likes the concept, while Amazon’s AWS chief Matt Garman is basically giving it the “cool idea, very far away” treatment.
For investors, the takeaway is less about tomorrow’s revenue and more about the direction of travel: space infrastructure, solar arrays, laser links, launch capacity, and orbital compute are turning from weird side quest into a real narrative. Maybe not a near-term earnings driver — but definitely the kind of thing that can move sentiment when the market starts pricing the next bottleneck.
Big picture: AI doesn’t just need better chips. It needs electricity, and now apparently it needs orbit too.
