The market is basically holding its breath
Oracle is heading into earnings on Friday, September 4th, and the setup is classic Wall Street drama: the business has been growing, but the stock has been getting treated like it stole something. Shares are down big this year even as the broader market has been busy setting records.
The good news, the bad news, and the giant AI bill
On the one hand, Oracle’s last quarter looked pretty solid. Revenue jumped 19% in Q4, and remaining performance obligations — basically the backlog investors obsess over — swelled by more than $85 billion to $638 billion. That’s the kind of number that makes growth bulls do a little victory lap.
On the other hand, the company’s AI push is expensive enough to make your credit card sweat. Oracle spent $48 billion on capex last fiscal year and is aiming for $70 billion in FY27, much of it tied to cloud infrastructure and Project Stargate. That spending spree has helped fuel worries about debt, especially since some of it sits only a notch above junk.
Why you should care
This is one of those earnings reports where the numbers matter, but the vibes may matter even more. Analysts are looking for another strong revenue print and more evidence that Oracle’s backlog is turning into actual sales. If the company shows the AI buildout is translating into durable growth, the stock could finally catch a bid. If not, the market may keep acting like Oracle is an expensive science fair project.
Big picture: Oracle doesn’t just need a decent quarter — it needs proof that the AI spending splurge is creating a future worth paying for.
