New boss, new shopping cart
Kohl's says Ryan M. Waymire will become its next Chief Merchandising Officer, reporting to CEO Michael J. Bender and taking the job on September 28. In retail, the merch chief is basically the person deciding what ends up on the shelves — and whether the shelves feel exciting or like a clearance rack from 2019.
Why investors should clock this
This isn't a flashy M&A deal or a giant earnings shock. But at a retailer like Kohl's, leadership changes in merchandising can signal a fresh attempt to sharpen the product mix, improve margins, and get customers to actually want to stroll past the entrance.
If the assortment clicks, the stock gets a nicer story to tell. If it doesn't, well, shoppers are still one extra candle aisle away from wandering back out.
The bigger retail chess move
Kohl's has been trying to convince Wall Street it can keep up in a brutally competitive department-store world. A new merchandising lead suggests management is still tinkering with the formula instead of pretending the old playbook is working.
Big picture: in retail, the right buyer can make the whole store feel smarter. The wrong one? That's how you end up with a lot of inventory and not enough customers.
