The data center becomes the main character
Hut 8 is usually the kind of name that lives in the bitcoin-miner-to-AI-hub bucket. But Tuesday, the stock got yanked around after a Reuters report tied one of its Texas projects to a massive new AI infrastructure deal.
According to the report, Anthropic signed a $35 billion cloud-computing deal with Lambda, the Nvidia-backed cloud provider, for a Texas data center. The project, in Nueces County, is being developed by Hut 8 and is said to cover roughly 350 megawatts of capacity.
Why investors care
This is the kind of news that makes a warehouse with good power access feel like the hottest property in the zip code. If Nvidia is really holding the lease on the site, that’s another neon sign flashing that demand for AI compute is still feral.
For Hut 8, the market is basically asking:
- Is this just a one-off headline, or the start of a bigger AI infrastructure monetization story?
- How much value can it squeeze out of its data center footprint beyond mining?
- And can it keep riding the AI wave without the whole thing turning into a hype sauna?
Big picture
Hut 8 is still a high-beta story, so the stock can swing like a loose shopping cart in a windy parking lot. But if these AI lease reports keep stacking up, the company’s real asset may not be its legacy mining business — it may be the land, power, and capacity everyone else suddenly wants.
Big picture: in AI, the chips get the glory, but the buildings and electricity bills are starting to look pretty sexy too.
