Quantum, but make it colocation
Equinix is plugging itself into the quantum conversation by partnering with Diraq to deploy a silicon spin quantum computer in its Sydney data center. The setup is expected by October 2026, which is basically Equinix saying: if the future of computing is weird and expensive, we’d like to host it too.
Why investors should care
This isn’t about a near-term revenue fireworks show. It’s about positioning. Equinix already sells the digital real estate where companies park their mission-critical gear, and quantum could become another fancy tenant in that building.
- More proof Equinix wants to be part of advanced computing infrastructure
- A potential long-term customer/partner ecosystem if quantum experiments move from science project to actual workload
- Another signal that data centers are evolving from server farms into the equivalent of a Swiss Army knife for compute
The big picture
Quantum computing is still very much in the “promise now, practical later” phase. But companies like Equinix don’t want to be the ones saying, “Oops, we missed it.” So they’re making room early, which is very on-brand for a business that lives on being the neutral landlord of the internet.
Big picture: this is a strategic partnership, not an instant profit booster — but it does show Equinix is trying to stay relevant as computing gets weirder, heavier, and a lot more expensive.
