The usual August drama? Not this time
Credit markets are doing that annoying thing where they ignore the script. August and September are normally the months when investment-grade spreads get a little wobbly, but this year the market basically hit snooze and stayed put.
Why that matters
That calm is interesting because the backdrop was anything but calm. Investors were still chewing on:
- questions about AI funding and whether the bubble-ish enthusiasm can keep paying the bills
- geopolitical tension in the Middle East
- a Fed that’s sounding a bit less dovish and a bit more “good luck out there”
Translation: nobody’s panicking yet
When IG spreads stay tight despite all that noise, it usually says one of two things: either investors think the risks are manageable, or they’re getting comfortable right before something gets spicy. Credit often acts like the market’s sober friend at the party — if it’s not flinching, people notice.
Big picture: the fact that spreads stayed flat in a seasonally weak month suggests demand for investment-grade credit is still solid, even with macro nerves buzzing in the background.
