Deal in reverse
Telephone and Data Systems just hit the undo button on its plan to acquire the rest of Array Digital Infrastructure. Instead of chasing the deal to the finish line, TDS says it’s no longer pursuing the Common Shares of Array it doesn’t already own and has withdrawn the proposal.
Why investors should care
This is one of those corporate plot twists that can change the whole capital-allocation story. If you were expecting TDS to spend more cash on M&A, that idea is now off the table — and the company says it expects to recommence its repurchase program instead.
Back to buybacks
That matters because buybacks are the financial equivalent of telling the market, “We’d rather put our money on ourselves.” For shareholders, that can be a friendlier use of capital than a takeover attempt, especially if management thinks the stock is cheap enough to hoover up.
Big picture
The main takeaway is simple: TDS is shifting from deal mode back to shareholder-return mode. Sometimes the most interesting M&A headline is the one that ends with a “never mind.”
