ScanSource opens the wallet
ScanSource (SCSC) just announced it’s buying MicroAge in an all-cash deal worth $220.5 million. No stock swap, no drama — just cash, borrowed through its existing credit facility, which is corporate-speak for “we found something we want and we’re charging it.”
Why this matters
For a technology product distributor, deals like this are about scale. Bigger footprint, more customers, more purchasing power, and hopefully a little more muscle when it comes to margins. The catch? You’re also adding debt, so this has to do more than look neat on a slide deck.
The investor angle
If the integration goes smoothly, ScanSource could squeeze out synergies and strengthen its position in distribution. If it doesn’t, investors may end up staring at a pricier balance sheet and asking the timeless question: was that growth, or just a very expensive shopping trip?
Big picture: this is the kind of acquisition that can make a company look more ambitious overnight — but the real test is whether the deal actually earns its keep.
