The AI chip carousel keeps spinning
Stanley Druckenmiller has been perfectly willing to pass on Nvidia, even after the AI trade turned into the hottest tent in the market. But the billionaire investor just opened a position in AMD, the kind of move that makes chip nerds and portfolio watchers sit up a little straighter.
Why this matters
When a legendary macro investor shifts from the obvious juggernaut to a challenger, it can signal two things at once:
- the trade is getting more selective
- the upside may be migrating to the second act, not the headline act
AMD has already ripped more than 100% this year, so this isn’t exactly a bargain-bin treasure hunt. Still, the stock getting a Druckenmiller-sized nod can keep the AI bull story humming.
Nvidia’s still the giant in the room
The irony here is pretty rich: Druckenmiller closed out his Nvidia stake two years ago and says he’d consider buying it again, but the money is going elsewhere for now. That doesn’t mean Nvidia is broken. It just means the market’s favorite AI playground now has more than one slide.
Big picture: if a veteran like Druckenmiller is leaning into AMD, it’s another reminder that in AI semis, the winners may not all wear the same jersey.
