Memory, but make it spicy
GlobalFoundries and RAAAM Memory Technologies are joining forces to develop next-generation GCRAM technology and a test chip for the FDX platform. That’s a mouthful, sure, but the investor takeaway is pretty straightforward: they’re trying to make on-chip memory denser and more power-efficient for advanced AI chips.
Why this matters
The companies say the goal is the densest standard CMOS on-chip memory solution for FDX, with:
- about 40% area shrink versus commodity SRAM
- up to 60% lower power usage
For chipmakers, that’s the kind of efficiency boost that can matter a lot. AI chips are famously thirsty little beasts, and anything that cuts power or shrinks footprint can be a selling point.
The bigger picture
For GlobalFoundries, this is less “headline-grabbing rocket ship” and more “quietly useful tech plumbing.” But plumbing matters. If the company can position FDX as a better home for AI workloads, that could strengthen its pitch to customers looking for performance without the full energy bill.
Big picture: in semis, sometimes the sexiest thing is the least sexy thing — memory that takes up less space and burns less power.
