Not your average data vendor
Tempus AI just got a fresh cheerleader in Cantor Fitzgerald, which initiated coverage with an Overweight rating and an $80 price target. That should’ve been a clean pop-the-champagne moment. Instead, the stock was still sliding, which tells you the market is still side-eyeing the story.
The analyst’s bigger bet
Sarah James’ argument is basically: Tempus isn’t just selling spreadsheets with a science badge. The company’s Data & Applications business behaves more like a platform — think Datadog or Snowflake vibes — because it sells data and AI tools to 19 of the 20 biggest pharma companies and 250+ biotechs across R&D pipelines.
That matters because a platform can scale with the whole industry instead of hinging on one drug, one trial, or one lucky quarter. In other words, Tempus may have a larger runway than the market is pricing in.
What could move the needle
Cantor says there are a few catalysts the market may be underestimating:
- CGP volumes could nearly double as physician adoption broadens.
- xT CDx migration and xF reimbursement could push therapy-selection pricing higher.
- MRD is still early, but the company sees a huge addressable market there.
- Hereditary testing still has room to fill in the gap.
- Algorithmic diagnostics could be the real moonshot if management’s value math holds up.
The analyst even thinks Tempus could top a $2.4 billion 2028 revenue estimate, versus $1.3 billion in 2025. That’s not exactly “slow and steady wins the race” territory.
Why investors should care
Tempus shares were down about 2.18% to $60.91 even with the bullish call, which is a nice reminder that the market can be stubborn longer than your patience lasts. If Cantor is right, the stock could have room to rerate as investors stop thinking of Tempus like a vendor and start thinking of it like infrastructure.
Big picture: this is a valuation debate dressed up as a stock call. If Tempus keeps proving it can scale like a platform, the market may have to upgrade the story — and the multiple — too.
