Two economies, one Beige Book
The Federal Reserve’s latest Beige Book basically says what a lot of retailers have been whispering: the American consumer is not one single blob. Based on information collected through Aug. 24, the survey found spending rising slightly overall, but the real wrinkle is who’s still buying and who’s tightening the belt.
Not everyone got the memo
High-end consumers are apparently still out here spending like the economy is a vibe and not a spreadsheet. Meanwhile, the broader consumer picture looks a lot more cautious, which is just a fancy way of saying the middle and lower end are feeling the pinch more acutely.
Why investors care
That kind of split can ripple through the market:
- Luxury and premium brands may stay more resilient than mass-market retailers
- Consumer discretionary names could keep telling very different stories depending on their customer base
- The Fed gets another reminder that aggregate data can hide a lot of pain — and a lot of spending
Big picture: if the consumer economy is starting to look like a VIP section and a general admission line, investors probably want to know which side their portfolio is sitting on.
