A better quarter, at least on paper
Petco came in Wednesday with a cleaner-looking second quarter: net income rose to $38.7 million, or $0.13 a share, up from $14 million, or $0.05 a share, last year. That’s the kind of improvement that makes a turnaround story feel a little less like wishful thinking and a little more like, well, a story.
Why investors should care
The big thing here isn’t just that Petco made more money. It’s that the company said it’s sticking with its FY26 outlook. In investor-land, that’s management basically saying, “No panic, we still think the plan works.” And after a few years of retail and pet-spending whiplash, that reassurance matters.
The fine print vibe check
Petco still has to prove this isn’t just a one-quarter sugar rush. A stronger bottom line is nice, but the market will want to see whether the business can keep converting pet parents into actual profits instead of just cute Instagram content and chew toys.
- Net income: $38.7 million vs. $14.0 million last year
- EPS: $0.13 vs. $0.05 last year
- Outlook: FY26 reaffirmed
Big picture: Petco is giving investors a little more reason to believe the reboot is real — but the stock will probably need a few more clean quarters before everyone stops treating it like a rescue dog with potential.
