Growth isn’t the issue
Sterling Infrastructure has basically told the market, “Relax, we’re not broken.” The company’s latest update shows 90% revenue growth and a third straight guidance raise, which is the kind of combo that usually gets attention for all the right reasons.
So why did the stock get smacked?
Because the market loves a dramatic haircut. STRL has fallen about 55%, but this note argues the drop is tied to margin compression, not a collapse in demand or operations. In other words: the business is still getting bigger, it’s just wearing a slightly less flattering outfit right now.
The mix shift is the whole plot twist
The pressure is coming from e-infrastructure, where lower-margin electrical work through CEC has taken up more space. That can make the overall margin picture look worse even if the underlying pieces are improving.
- Site development margins are improving on their own
- Electrical margins are improving too
- The headline margin dip is more about what’s growing faster than what’s breaking
Big picture: when a construction name is still growing this fast and raising guidance repeatedly, you probably don’t want to confuse a margin wobble with a busted story.
