ARK's doing a little portfolio spring cleaning
Cathie Wood's ARK Invest hit the sell button on Shopify after the stock's monster August run, unloading 40,392 shares on September 2nd. The biggest chunk came from ARKK, with ARKW also trimming its stake.
That move comes after SHOP surged more than 25% in August and crossed $158, which is the kind of rally that makes any growth investor start squinting at the valuation tab like it's a suspicious receipt.
Why this matters
Shopify is still doing plenty right. In its latest quarter, revenue jumped 34% year over year to $3.58 billion, gross merchandise volume rose 32% to $115.57 billion, and free cash flow hit $654 million. That's not exactly the profile of a business falling apart.
But the stock's trailing P/E is hovering near 96, and the shares have already pulled back about 7% in the past week. So ARK's sale reads like a classic growth-investor dilemma:
- take some profits now
- or keep riding a name that's still growing fast but no longer looks cheap

The bigger signal here may be what ARK did with the cash. Wood also added to names like Intellia, Rocket Lab, and Block, which tells you this wasn't a broad retreat from risk. More like a remix.
And if you own one of the funds with big SHOP exposure — especially the VanEck Digital Native Economy ETF, where Shopify is a huge holding — this matters beyond just one stock getting a little stage fright.
Big picture: ARK isn't abandoning Shopify. It's just behaving a lot more like someone who knows the party can still be fun, but the punch bowl isn't free forever.
