The earnings were fine. The bar was not.
Guidewire Software did the classic “earnings are good, but the stock still falls” routine. Q4 revenue climbed 15% year over year, ARR rose 19%, and margins kept expanding — basically, a clean execution report.
So why the faceplant?
Because the market isn’t just grading the past. It’s peeking at what comes next, and Guidewire’s guidance suggests growth may cool near term. That’s a problem when a stock is already priced like perfection cosplay.
The valuation hangover
Even after a 15% post-earnings drop, Guidewire still trades around 41.5x non-GAAP 2027 earnings. That’s not cheap for a company investors now expect to slow down, no matter how sticky the product is or how nice the customer wins sound.
A few takeaways:
- Strong moat? Yes.
- Low churn and switching costs? Also yes.
- Can the stock still get punished if guidance cools? Apparently, absolutely.
Big picture: Guidewire is still a quality software business, but quality and upside are not the same thing. When the multiple is this rich, even a good quarter can feel like a reality check.
