Flex wants more juice
Flex just agreed to buy EPC Power for $4.4 billion, a move that adds grid-forming power conversion tech to its data center and utility toolkit. In plain English: Flex is trying to become even more important in the “keep the AI lights on” business.
Why this matters
EPC Power brings more than 15 GW of deployed capacity across 62 countries, plus U.S. manufacturing that could top 30 GW by 2027. The company’s tech fits neatly into next-gen 800V data center setups, including rectifiers, DC-DC conversion, and eventually solid-state transformers. That’s the kind of plumbing you don’t brag about at dinner, but you absolutely need if you’re building the infrastructure behind AI.
The catch: big check, bigger ambition
Flex says it expects to fund the deal with a mix of debt and equity, which means this isn’t exactly a couch-cushion purchase. The company also plans to tuck EPC Power into its Cloud and Power Infrastructure segment — and then spin that segment out as a separate public company in Q1 2027. So yes, this is one of those corporate-swoop-and-rearrange-the-furniture situations.
Big picture
Investors seem to like the strategic logic: Flex gets deeper exposure to data center power demand, a market that’s looking increasingly sticky as AI buildouts keep eating electricity like it’s an all-you-can-eat buffet. But with a $4.4 billion price tag, the real question is whether the synergy story turns into actual earnings power, not just a shiny slide deck.
