FDA says yes
Ionis Pharmaceuticals got the green light from the FDA for Zanvastro, a quarterly injection for Alexander disease. That’s a real milestone — approvals are the biotech version of getting the velvet rope opened.
So why the shrug?
Wall Street, apparently, has the attention span of a caffeinated squirrel. Instead of popping champagne, analysts are looking past the approval and asking the more annoying question: what does this mean for the broader business, not just one win?
The investor angle
For biotech investors, an approval is nice, but it’s not the whole movie. The market usually wants to know:
- how big the commercial opportunity is,
- whether the drug can actually generate meaningful revenue,
- and what’s coming next in the pipeline.
If those answers don’t feel big enough, a shiny FDA label can still get the financial equivalent of a polite golf clap.
Big picture: Ionis got the regulatory win it wanted, but the stock reaction suggests investors are still waiting for a bigger growth story.
