Bye-bye, branches
BMO Financial Group says it has completed the sale of 138 U.S. branches to First Citizens Bank. The branches were spread across places like North Dakota and South Dakota, which makes this less “headline-grabbing Wall Street drama” and more “slow, deliberate corporate housecleaning.”
Why you should care
This kind of move usually tells you something about where a bank wants to play. Selling a chunk of branches can free up capital, trim complexity, and let management focus on markets it actually wants to lean into. In other words: fewer stores, more strategy.
The First Citizens side of the table
For First Citizens, this is a straightforward branch grab — more footprint, more customer reach, and a little extra scale without needing to build everything from scratch. For BMO, the deal is more about sharpening the map than making a splash.
Big picture
Not every bank story is about earnings surprises or rate drama. Sometimes it’s just the plumbing getting rearranged, and that plumbing can still matter for the long game.
