The plot twist
For the past year, Oracle bulls and bears have been fighting over the same thing: all that AI infrastructure spending. Bulls called it a strategic land grab; bears saw a free-cash-flow disaster with extra steps. But this story says the argument may be shifting from how much Oracle is spending to who Oracle is betting on.
Enter the OpenAI dependency
Veteran tech analyst Paul Meeks says the market is increasingly focused on counterparty risk, and specifically on OpenAI. Oracle’s relationship with OpenAI was once treated like a golden ticket. Now? It’s looking more like a heavyweight anchor tied to the company’s AI story. Meeks says roughly half of Oracle’s remaining performance obligations are tied to OpenAI, which is the kind of concentration that can make investors a little twitchy.
Why investors should care
If a big chunk of Oracle’s AI backlog is concentrated in one customer, the company’s future isn’t just about building more servers or racking up bigger capex. It’s about whether that customer keeps growing, keeps paying, and keeps needing Oracle’s infrastructure at the pace Wall Street expects.
That means investors may start watching two things at once:
- whether Oracle can turn its AI buildout into real cash flow
- whether its customer base broadens enough to reduce the OpenAI risk
Big picture: Oracle’s AI story is still alive, but it’s getting a lot less “AI miracle” and a lot more “show me the money.”
