A pretty good quarter, somehow still not enough
Casey's General Stores turned in a first-quarter beat: revenue came in at $5.68 billion and EPS landed at $7.37, both ahead of estimates. Normally, that’s the kind of report that at least earns you a polite nod from Wall Street.
But the market is zooming in on the fine print
The problem is the details weren't exactly fireworks. Inside same-store sales rose 3.2% year over year, which is still growth, just not the turbo-charged kind investors like to see — especially after 4.3% growth in the comparable quarter last year. Fuel same-store gallons sold also dipped 0.3%, so the gas pump side of the business wasn’t exactly blasting off either.
Buybacks, liquidity, and a very grocery-store kind of growth plan
Casey's did repurchase about $45.6 million of its own stock during the quarter, and it ended with roughly $1.4 billion in liquidity. Management also said it expects to open at least 120 stores in fiscal 2027 through a mix of M&A and new construction, which is basically the company saying, “We’re not done expanding the neighborhood pizza empire.”
Big picture: this was a beat, but not the kind that makes investors forget about decelerating comps. In a market mood like this, even a decent quarter can get treated like a lukewarm slice.
