Good news, then the stock did a faceplant
Chewy turned in a pretty decent second quarter: revenue rose 7.3% to $3.33 billion, just ahead of the $3.32 billion analysts were expecting, and profit also came in above estimates. On paper, that sounds like a happy tail-wagging moment.
But cash flow is the real boss here
Investors were clearly more focused on free cash flow, which disappointed and helped send the stock down 8.6% after the print. That’s the classic market move of saying, “Nice sales growth, but show me the money money.”
Why you should care
For a retailer like Chewy, revenue growth is good, but cash generation is what tells you whether the business is getting more efficient or just getting bigger. If free cash flow keeps lagging, the market may keep docking the stock even when the top line looks healthy.
Big picture: Chewy is still growing, but this quarter reminded investors that in the stock market, profit can get applause — and cash flow gets the final vote.
