Not exactly a growth victory lap
1-800-FLOWERS.COM came out with a mixed FY2027 outlook on Thursday: net revenue is expected to fall, while annual adjusted EBITDA is projected to improve sharply. In other words, the company is telling Wall Street, 'We may be smaller, but we should be a lot more efficient.'
That matters because this is the kind of update investors parse like detectives at a crime scene. A weaker revenue outlook can spook the market, especially for a retailer that still needs to prove demand is durable. But a better EBITDA outlook says management thinks it can squeeze more profit out of the business even if the sales backdrop stays soft.
Why the stock is wobbling
The pre-market drop makes sense: revenue decline headlines tend to land like a wet blanket. Still, the EBITDA piece is doing some of the heavy lifting here. If margins improve enough, the market may eventually decide this is a turnaround story rather than a growth story.
Big picture
For investors, the question isn't just 'Are sales down?' It's 'Can the company keep profits moving in the right direction while the top line takes a nap?' That’s the whole ballgame here.
