Constellation’s latest shopping spree
Constellation Energy is shelling out $715 million to buy 100% of RISEC Holdings, the owner of the Rhode Island State Energy Center, from Shell Energy North America. That’s a very corporate way of saying: one big power player is handing another one a gas-fueled generation asset in Johnston, Rhode Island.
Why investors should care
This isn’t a cute little side quest. Power plants are the bricks-and-mortar stuff that can actually move the needle for a utility and power producer. Constellation gets a combined-cycle natural gas facility, which can help support its generation mix and cash flow profile — the kind of boring-but-important infrastructure that Wall Street often loves right up until it has to read the footnotes.
The real-world part
The deal is for RISEC Holdings, which owns the Rhode Island State Energy Center, a combined-cycle electric generation facility fueled by natural gas. The purchase is subject to customary price adjustments, so the final tab could wiggle a bit around the headline number.
Big picture: Constellation is doing what a lot of energy companies do when they want to look less like a stock chart and more like a toll road — adding assets that can keep the lights on and the revenue coming.
