Debt? What debt?
Comstock Resources just got a much-needed financial tune-up. The company says its deals with SOCAR and the Jones family could cut projected year-end 2027 net debt from roughly $4 billion to below $2 billion.
That’s not a small tweak — that’s the difference between carrying a backpack and lugging a refrigerator uphill.
Why investors care
Less debt means less pressure on future cash flow, which matters a lot when you’re trying to make a big gas development thesis pencil out. Comstock is still working on the economics of its Western Haynesville play, so a cleaner balance sheet gives it a lot more room to breathe.
The SOCAR deal also looks pretty rich on paper, coming in at around 7x EBITDAX assuming $3.30 NYMEX natural gas. Translation: the market is still trying to figure out how valuable this gas asset really is, but these deals clearly improve the company’s financing math.
Big picture
For Comstock, this is less about a flashy new product and more about survival math. If debt comes down and gas economics cooperate, the company may finally get a little more runway. And in commodity land, runway is everything.
