Backlog today, payoff tomorrow?
AeroVironment is back in the spotlight, and not because the stock has been throwing a party. The company is being pitched as a Buy thanks to strong growth in its AxS segment — think unmanned systems and related defense products — plus a string of contract wins that keep the order book nice and chunky.
The not-so-fun part
The catch? The SCDE side of the business is still lagging, which is a fancy way of saying the story isn’t a straight line up and to the right. That business has longer-term upside through LOCUST and Titan, but right now it’s more “promise” than “party trick.”
Why investors should care
Management’s FY27 setup depends on a pretty aggressive second-half EBITDA margin jump. Translation: AeroVironment needs the high-margin LOCUST program to get commercialized and the product mix to cooperate, or the math gets awkward fast.
- AxS is the current growth engine
- SCDE is the slower burner with long-dated potential
- FY27 guidance leans on stronger margins later
- LOCUST and Titan are the big swing factors
Big picture: this is one of those defense names where the backlog looks great, the near-term quarter looks a little sleepy, and the real debate is whether the future actually shows up on time.
