New deal, bigger ambitions
Viasat and Space42 are turning a handshake into a binding agreement at World Space Business Week in Paris. The goal: launch Equatys, a shared space and ground infrastructure platform built to extend mobile coverage where terrestrial networks tap out — think remote regions, dead zones, and even coverage gaps in busy metro areas.
For Viasat, this is less “nice partnership” and more “we’re building the rails for the next wave of satellite connectivity.” The company is already a major player in satellite and secure communications, but this arrangement pushes it deeper into the direct-to-device and advanced MSS game.
Why the market may care
The headline number here is the planned up to $1 billion initial equity contribution from the two companies. That’s a serious commitment, and it signals this isn’t a press-release friendship where everyone smiles, shakes hands, and disappears by Tuesday.
If the platform works, it could give Viasat a stronger route into global coverage expansion, especially in places where traditional mobile networks are weak, expensive, or just not an option. That said, big infrastructure bets can also mean big execution risk — and the market tends to get twitchy when capital requirements get that chunky.
Big picture
Viasat is trying to turn satellite connectivity from a niche backstop into something closer to everyday infrastructure. If Equatys gets traction, that could be a meaningful strategic win. If not, well, the satellite industry has never been short on ambitious ideas and expensive orbiting dreams.
