Fuel perk, now with more pumps
Walmart+ is widening its Gas Savings benefit through a new partnership with Citgo, giving members access to 10-cent-per-gallon discounts at more than 4,000 additional gas stations. In retail terms, that’s basically Walmart telling shoppers: “Hey, while you’re saving on groceries, here’s a little mercy at the pump too.”
Why investors should care
This isn’t some blockbuster acquisition or a jaw-dropping earnings twist. But membership programs live and die on perceived value, and fuel savings is one of those sticky perks that can keep people inside the Walmart ecosystem instead of wandering off to a rival subscription. More stations means more chances for members to actually use the benefit, which is the whole game.
The sneaky part of subscription math
The economics here are pretty simple: if the perk is easy to find and easy to use, it feels valuable. If it’s buried in a confusing app maze or only works at three lonely stations in the middle of nowhere, it’s just marketing glitter.
By expanding the network, Walmart is making Walmart+ a little harder to cancel and a little easier to justify — especially when fuel prices are doing their usual “surprise, we’re back” routine.
Big picture: this is less about gas and more about habit. The more often members use Walmart+ benefits in real life, the more the subscription starts feeling like a utility instead of a nice-to-have.
