The vibe check: AI spending is no longer subtle
Apollo Global Management President Jim Zelter went on Bloomberg Surveillance and tossed out a pretty blunt takeaway: the AI capex boom is now so big it’s starting to look, in his words, “unprecedented.”
That’s Wall Street-speak for: the spending treadmill isn’t slowing down anytime soon. And if companies keep pouring cash into chips, data centers, networking gear, and everything else that makes AI run, you’re looking at a capital cycle that could keep a lot of suppliers busy — and a lot of balance sheets sweating.
The other shoe: rates aren’t racing back down
Zelter also said he thinks rates are going to be “higher for a while.” Not exactly the kind of line that makes borrowers want to do cartwheels.
For investors, that means:
- financing stays expensive
- long-duration growth stocks don’t get the easy-rate tailwind they’ve been spoiled with
- AI buildout winners may still win, but the cost of funding all that growth remains a real storyline
Why you should care
This is one of those classic market crosscurrents: huge demand for AI infrastructure on one side, stubbornly high rates on the other. That can be great for the companies selling picks and shovels — but it also raises the bar for everyone trying to justify sky-high valuations.
Big picture: the AI party may still be in full swing, but the credit card bill isn’t getting any smaller.
