Diesel’s not playing nice
J.B. Hunt just fired off a warning shot: higher fuel and driver costs are squeezing margins, and the company now expects third-quarter profit to fall 5%-10% sequentially. The stock promptly got smacked, dropping 13% — its worst day since the early pandemic panic.
Why investors should care
This isn’t just one trucking name having a bad Wednesday. Diesel prices are doing their best impression of a jump scare, with the national average hitting $6.31 a gallon, up 70.5% from a year ago. When fuel spikes, freight carriers don’t magically get to pay the bill with good vibes.
That’s why transportation ETFs like XTN, IYT, and FTXR are now in the spotlight. Their exposure to trucking, rail, logistics, and other fuel-hungry businesses means a margin squeeze at one carrier can ripple through the whole basket.
ETF math gets spicy
XTN has the most direct trucking exposure of the bunch, which is great when freight is humming and less great when diesel is behaving like a VIP concert ticket. IYT is a bit more mixed, thanks to its heavy rail weighting. FTXR spreads the risk more broadly, but it still carries enough trucking names to feel the heat if fuel stays stubbornly high.
Big picture: if carriers can’t pass through higher costs fast enough, transportation ETFs may stop moving as one neat little theme trade and start splitting into winners and losers based on who’s most insulated from the fuel bill.
