Groupon wants a seat at the agentic commerce table
Groupon just announced the AI Builder Pack, a move that opens its local marketplace to independent developers, creators, and AI agents. In plain English: if the future of shopping is bots hunting for deals while you doomscroll, Groupon wants to be one of the places those bots actually use.
The company says builders can spin up a website, app, or agent that features Groupon deals and earn commissions on qualifying purchases. That’s a nice little twist on the old coupon-book model — less “clip-and-save,” more “code-and-convert.”
Why investors should care
This is Groupon trying to stay relevant in the era of AI-native commerce, where the app in your pocket may matter less than the agent doing the shopping for you. Groupon also said its deals are already live in ChatGPT and Claude, which is a pretty loud hint that it wants distribution wherever consumers are asking machines to do the legwork.
The big question
The move doesn’t guarantee a revenue breakout — lots of companies have discovered that “AI” is not a magic printer for money. But if Groupon can become part of the checkout layer for local commerce, that could open up a new growth lane beyond the old-school daily-deals playbook.
Public access is expected during October, with a waitlist already open now at groupon.com/hubs/ai-builder-pack. Big picture: Groupon is betting that the next wave of shopping won’t start with a search bar — it’ll start with a chatbot.
