New bull, same volatile stock
Applied Digital got a shiny new vote of confidence Thursday when Wells Fargo started coverage with an Overweight rating and a $50 price target. The stock popped nearly 6% in premarket trading, because apparently Wall Street can still throw a little confetti on an AI infrastructure name and get everyone’s attention.
Why the market cared
This isn’t just about one analyst scribbling a higher number on a note. Applied Digital is one of those high-beta names that can move hard when sentiment shifts, and the upgrade landed at a time when Nasdaq and S&P futures were both green. That gave traders a nice little double-shot of optimism: a bullish call on the stock plus a risk-on market backdrop.
But the chart still looks wobbly
Here’s the catch: the stock is still in repair mode. It’s below its 20-day, 50-day, 100-day, and 200-day moving averages, which is basically the market’s way of saying, “Nice bounce, but we’re not back on the bicycle yet.” Resistance sits around $29, and until APLD can reclaim that zone, rallies may keep running into a wall.
The ETF angle
Applied Digital also shows up in a few thematic ETFs, including blockchain and digital infrastructure funds. That matters because flows can work like a sneaky tailwind — or a headwind if those funds are getting dumped. Big picture: the Wells Fargo call gives APLD a fresh catalyst, but the stock still needs real follow-through before traders stop treating every bounce like a potential trap.
